Speedgoat 50k- probably the last harder effort before Leadville. I got in off the wait list this week and had to go. Even if the course is quite different than Leadville. Before the race I swapped out my hokas for a new pair at the booth. This was a pretty big deal actually as mine are so worn that there is virtually no tread on the bottom. Honestly the short of this all is that I felt great. The whole day. Up until the last 10k or so - I was even thinking it was easy. I never had any soreness in my legs. I never really had any serious issues. I even closed the last two miles in 6:40's- they were rolling flats/ downhills. Not to take anything away from the course - which some call the toughest 50k in the country. Some truly massive climbs- 12k total in climbing. And then some of the most ridiculous technical scattered toaster size rock descents I have been on. That's really my overwhelming weak point- technical or steep descents. The only place I got passed all day. I mean- I've never really RACED an ultra before- its always just been about being out there and the experience. I pushed maybe 75% today and it left me to wonder what racing would feel like. The winning times are MIND blowing. 5:41 for women? That's ridiculous. Truly un believable. Feeling strong- still worried about running at 10k feet in August - but it's gonna be what it's gonna be. |
